brady – 1st birthday!

okay, so i can’t believe that our little guy is 1 already.  it is amazing how fast a year goes, and how much a little guy changes your life!  Saturday, family and friends gathered to celebrate our son’s 1st birthday!  thanks everyone for coming! it is amazing how loved you feel when everyone shows up at your house…(with a lot of people driving up from Fort Wayne/Decatur).  Brian and I decided on a radio flyer theme birthday (we had our family pictures taken with a radio flyer…which you will get to see very soon!!!) and one of brian’s favorite memories as a kid was the radio flyer that he would pull around everywhere!  it will also be very useful this spring when we want to pack brady up for a walk or to pull him around on our new land..(which we have a ton of work to do on!)

Making the cakes were so much fun, I haven’t decorated a cake since i was young (something my grandma used to do)…so needless to say, my piping was a little shaky. Plus, both cakes were gluten and dairy free, with does present some challenges…so i wasn’t able to decorate with a stiff traditional buttercream. it didn’t matter though, the cake was a huge success with brady and he made a huge mess…and loved it.  he has been given really no white sugar his first year of life, so needless to say…we let him eat the whole thing and he was wired for hours and then crashed. a few things that i learned in the “red cake” making process: 1. it makes a huge mess…especially on a one year old…probably not the smartest idea. 2. natural food coloring is about virtually impossible to make vibrant red…I got pink at best…(if any one has any pointers on that….I would love to hear them)…so needless to say, I gave in and used regular food coloring.

eyerhere are a few favorites from the day! (i can’t take credit for all the pics…Mel, took a bunch so we could enjoy brady making a mess!)

July 11, 2010 - 5:42 am Stephanie - I love your cakes! Where did you get the wagon to put the big cake on? Thanks!

July 12, 2010 - 8:52 am jenn - Hi Stephanie, thanks, it was a lot of fun making them ;-) for the large cake, the base is a doll sized radio flyer...9 x 13 ish in size and instead of putting the wagon together, i screwed the wheels on a board for the cake to sit on. i bought the radio flyer set on ebay and that came with both sizes...that was the cheapest place i found them.

November 21, 2010 - 8:21 pm Linda Tipton - Hi, My daugther-in-law came across your blog when she was searching for a Radio Flyer 1st birthday for her son (my wonderful grandson.) We love your photos and your wonderful cakes. We were wondering where you got the wagon platform for your biggest cake... It looks just like the Radio Flyer's wheels, but we couldn't figure out how you did that.... Can you please help us out? A million thank yous!!

November 22, 2010 - 1:52 am jenn - Hi Linda, for the large cake, the base is a doll sized radio flyer…9 x 13 ish in size and instead of putting the wagon together, i screwed the wheels on a board for the cake to sit on (i used a black board made of a plastic substance, but painted wood would work well also. i bought the radio flyer set on ebay and that came with both sizes…that was the cheapest place i found them.

March 29, 2011 - 11:05 am Courtney Northcutt - I love your Radio Flyer cakes. I'm curious. Did you bake the baby's cake in the tiny wagon or cut a piece of cake the size of the wagon and insert it? Your photography skills are wonderful too!

September 13, 2011 - 10:00 pm Jen - Love the photos- these cakes are too cute. I am planning my son's first with this theme. Is the smash cake wagon plastic or metal, and do you remember what size it was? So many wagons out there to choose from. Thanks.

October 5, 2011 - 12:12 pm jenn - it was the little metal wagon that i used for the smash cake.
